Bad Day At Black Rock

First was the news that Newcastle have cooled their interest in Spurs and England striker Jermain Defoe.

And they have moved aside to let Liverpool talk with Feyenoord's Dutch World Cup striker Dirk Kuyt, although it is said the Reds will not pay the asking price - believed to be around £10m.

United have not bid £10m for West Ham striker Dean Ashton (s reported in London) and, apparently, have no intention of doing so.

Real Madrid are in talks with Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Darren Bent has signed a four-year deal with Charlton Athletic.

Add to this comments in the Chronicle that Newcastle have nowhere near as much to spend on players as many believe, and all in all it has been a bad day.
