AZ Show Their Credentials

AZ Alkmaar were held to a goalless draw by fellow high-flyers Feyenoord at the DSB Stadion, but that is indeed a great result considering Feyenoord are still seen as a major force in European football.

AZ came closest to securing all three points when Maarten Martens' curling effort struck the woodwork in the second half.

The home side started brightest and Moussa Dembele missed a chance to give AZ an early lead when he fired wide from the edge of the penalty area.

AZ continued to push forward and Feyenoord goalkeeper Henk Timmer needed to produce an excellent save to prevent Julian Jenner's 12-yard drive from breaking the deadlock.

AZ started strongest after the interval and Nourdin Boukhari's long-range drive forced a good save from Timmer, before Charisteas blazed over from the edge of the penalty area after Drenthe's effort had been saved as the game swung from end to end.

AZ pushed forward and Martens' curling shot struck the post after former Rangers striker Shota Arveladze's clever pass in the 70th minute.

Dembele then missed another golden opportunity when he was denied from close range by Timmer following Steinsson's low cross. And in the dying stages the impressive Timmer pushed substitute Simon Cziommer's free-kick over the crossbar as Feyenoord held on for the draw.
