It worked, and Bellamy took the award ahead of the likes of Alan Shearer, Shay Given and Nobby Solano with more votes than all the other players put together! An incredible 57% of the votes.

Today Bellamy has been named the Wales player of the year for 2007, and he admitted his suprise because he claims he has been "very average" this last year.

Bellamy: "It was a bit weird when I found out I had won. In my opinion I have had better years and not won it.

"This time I feel I have had quite an average year, but that is the way it works sometimes."

He made 132 appearances for Newcastle between 2001-5, scoring 42 goals. And now plays for West Ham.
