But the sportswear tycoon will only leave St James's Park if he secures the £300 million price he wants for his stake in a club he took over last year.

Ashley paid £134m for the Magpies this time last year in a surprise takeover.

But The People reports he was stunned to find Newcastle's debts greater than anticipated at around £100m.

The People: "With Chris Mort set to be replaced by Derek Llambias, Ashley would be ready to sell, if he could find a buyer."
