Ashley Ponders Over FA Cup Conundrum!

Last updated : 31 December 2007 By Footy Mad - Editor
Rumour is very strong on Tyneside that Ashley sees Newcastle's performance - and result - at Stoke as the make-or-break of the manager.

With no European competition to look forward to (which is hardly Big Sam's fault); out of the League Cup almost before it began; and a struggling league position; the FA Cup is United's only saving grace.

A defeat at the first time of asking would see the end to yet another horror season.

But Ashley has a choice to make. Does he back Sam in the transfer market or keep the dosh for the next boss?

If he waits until after the FA Cup tie, you can rule out a move for a Premiership player because chances are they will be cup-tied, which will hardly boost our FA Cup hopes and our ONE chance of a cup.

Sam Allardyce will want to spend (obviousl), but given recent events, only players with thick skins will survive at St James' Park.

His Premiership targets are Peter Crouch and Wes Brown.

The Liverpool striker has overcome adversity more than once and has the character and pedigree to lift both players and fans, which is what Allardyce needs right now.

But buying Crouch would show once again the boss only knows one system ... the long ball game!

But Sam is one who could attempt to prise Brown from Old Trafford, while his ability to resurrect the careers of fading stars would come in extremely handy.
