Speculation that he is set to sign Barry Ferguson is seen as a joke north of the border, but Rangers today admitted they will listen to offers for "certain players".

The Magpies have been persistently linked with the Rangers star, but Ferguson has yet to comment, and the Scotland international could be on the move to Tyneside in a £3million deal ... if you believe today's newspapers.

Kinnear (talking to the Guardian): "The people we have available are not regular starters.

"Some are not orthodox centre-midfield men, so it is serious.

"I've made this statement to the owners so that they are aware of the situation. The people that we'll have available on the bench against West Ham are only kids.

"I'm working with a small crew of players. Training is like dancing on eggs at the moment. We just keep it simple and hope that we can get 11 players out."
