Zenit St Petersburg have confirmed to that Newcastle target Andrei Arshavin will not leave the club before Monday's transfer deadline.

Zenit have revealed that even if their valuation of the player - around £20million - was met, it was now too late for a deal to be done.

Tottenham have been locked in talks about signing the highly-rated forward all summer - but a deal was never struck.

Some suggested he could be Mike Ashley´s "wow signing".
