Another Setback For Toon Star

The 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international missed the start of last season due to injury, and could again be a late starter in the new league campaign.

Although the report on the official website suggests things are going well, rumours from Dublin suggest such an injury can take six months to put right.

NUFC statement: "Damien Duff has undergone a foot operation following the injury sustained during Newcastle United's game at Portsmouth on April 14.

"The Republic of Ireland international has been sidelined since the game at Fratton Park, but underwent surgery on his injured right foot last Friday.

"The operation was a success, and left-winger Duff is now recuperating back in Dublin."

The £5million signing from Chelsea has struggled in the side and there have been strong rumours he would like a return to London. Although Sunderland is hardly London, Mackem boss Roy Keane would be interested if he became available.
