If the truth was known, Anelka always had doubts about Newcastle, for whatever reason.

But he has welcomed Kevin Keegan's return to management at St James' Park, admitting their time together at Manchester City was "wonderful".

If Keegan was the Newcastle manager during that period, you can bet your bottom dollar Anelka would be a Newcastle player now.

Anelka: "I think it is good for the Premier League and English football.

"I worked with him in City and had a wonderful time with him. He is a great manager.

"When I used to play for City I liked to work with him. The Newcastle players will enjoy it.

"He used to be a striker so for a striker he is very good. You play a lot of games and have a lot of exercise in front of the goal.

"He brings a smile to the pitch and they need it. So he can be good for them.

"He was very good for me. It is good when you can speak with the manager. He used to be a very good player and he knows everything about football. He helped me a lot when I had a hard time at City. He's great, just great."
