Anderson Eating His Words?

John Anderson: "I hear all these supporters talking about an Alan Shearer-Kevin Keegan dream team - there is no way in the world Kevin is going to come back here.

"The reason people remember Kevin so fondly is because of the style of football and the way his team played.

"But you are never, ever going to get that again because there is so much pressure in the game now when it comes to the financial side of it.

"You couldn't do now what Kevin did, pick 11 players and say, 'Go out and play. If they score four, you score five'.

"It was Kevin's first job as well, but I suppose it was a different scenario then.

"We were in the old second division and looked like we were going down into the third. It was a rags to riches story, so to speak."

On the same day Sir John Hall said Newcastle should forget talk about a return to Keegan-mania.

Sir  John Hall: "Alan Shearer is the most dedicated professional I have ever met. He will probably be a tremendous manager but I do not think he would be prepared to come in yet.

"Kevin has maybe had his time in football and is now doing other things.

"I am pleased that Harry (Redknapp) has dropped out. None of the fans I have spoken to were behind him. They did not feel he was any better than Sam.

"I have a high regard for Gerard Houllier and he could do a job at Newcastle. He did well at Lyon.

"The players let Allardyce down. The displays has been abysmal - probably some of the worst I have seen in 20 years."
