And once Stoke gained promotion, the plan was for Ameobi to make a permanent move to the Potteries for £4m.
But the word from the Midlands today was that Ameobi is missing his native Tyneside and is not 100% certain that he wants to leave St James's Park after only playing a bit part at the club.
Stoke are also after James Beattie, and Ameobi is already on the subs bench, so his future is up in the air.
If Ameobi pulls out at the last minute Norwich City are said to be ready to offer him a deal, but nothing like the £4m Stoke were set to pay.
