Taking strong exception to suggestions in the national press their domination of West Ham on Saturday was purely down to free-kicks and long throws, the club have released a statement.

After Saturday's frustrating 1-1 draw with West Ham, where a string of chances went begging, boss Sam Allardyce was blasted for using the only tactic he knows ... kick and run.

But the club have jumped to his defence, claiming post-match statistics prove "beyond any doubt that Rovers out-performed the Hammers all over the pitch, especially in open play".

Rovers officials took strong exception to suggestions that the relentless pressure relied purely on free-kicks and long throws.

Allardyce: "We must start converting really good performances into wins not draws.

"Home and away we have lacked the cutting edge when we have been the predominant team in the game and we have not converted those opportunities into wins."
