Harper said (only last week) that he would stay at St James' Park and fight for his place rather than go out on loan, but he obviously made a u-turn.
But his move to the south coast was a bit of a shock, even more so considering Brighton have not won in seven Championship games.
Steve Harper: "It's a great stadium, with a great set of fans and a club that has just gone up, so it's going in the right direction.
"It's a long way to move from Newcastle but I didn't want to wait around for a club nearer to home.
"The manager and goalkeeping coach also made it attractive. They are both highly recommended and the gaffer was first class on the phone when I spoke to him. Now I'm here it's time to get stuck in.
"I don't want to sit and do nothing for the last few years of my career and I'm excited to be here.
"There are a lot of characters and we are going to need that to get away from this bad run."
