They head into the Oberndorf Tournament in Germany today.

Newcastle are among eight teams competing in the Under-19 competition.

At 4pm today, they will play their first game in the tournament, against Eintracht Frankfurt, while they will also face Brazilian side Fluminense at 7pm.

Tomorrow, they will come up against Bayer Leverkusen, before concluding their involvement in the competition on Sunday.

Peter Beardsley: “You could see Gateshead were a bit ahead of us in terms of their preparation, so I wasn’t too worried.

“Gateshead were men, while we had five kids who can still play in the Academy for us.

“They gave us a lesson, but when we dust ourselves off, have a look at what we’ve seen and get back on the training ground, it will be good for them.

“We’ve got a young team and we understand.

“We’ve obviously got bigger things to come about a month down the line.

“Our club knows it’s not about winning at this level, certainly not in pre-season, and because of that, we’re not too disappointed.”
