Didi Hamann was the first to score for the Reds followed by a penalty from Michael Owen, before Gary Speed and captain Alan Shearer levelled for the Magpies.

In a frustrating first half Owen weaved his way through the Newcastle defence but missed an open goal in the 36th minute, to the disappointment of a capacity crowd.

Celebrating the equaliser
Titus Bramble lost his footing and gave the ball to Steven Gerrard who crossed it to the striker, but Owen slipped as he blasted a right-foot shot that sent the ball flying over the crossbar.

In the 54th minute Nol Solano missed a gentle pass from Newcastle keeper Shay Given which Reds Hamann pounced on.

The midfielder then powered the ball into the bottom of the goal from ten yards after running through a wide open Magpies defence.

Nineteen minutes later Newcastle's Nikos Dabizas pushed down on Reds captain Sami Hyypia's shoulders as he tried to stop a Gerrard corner from piercing the goal, resulting in a penalty.

Striker Owen stepped up to seamlessly place the ball into the bottom right of the net as Given dived to the left.

Two goals down and with just ten minutes to go the Magpies made a 81st minute comeback as Speed ran on to a Craig Bellamy pass to belt the ball into the back of the net from ten yards.

In the 88th minute Shearer gained a Premiership point for his team as he scored the equaliser. The Newcastle captain leapt above a huddle of players to head a Laurent Robert corner powerfully into the centre of the goal
