Would Ferguson Have Aided Irish Euro Hopes?

It didn't happen, so the Newcastle player pinned his Northern Ireland "red hand of Ulster" to the mast.

But the Republic have been nothing short of embarrassing in Poland this week, and perhaps they should have taken a look at young Ferguson.

I'm not saying he would have made a difference, but he couldn't have done any worse!

Mind you - it has been just as bad for Northern Ireland.

Fergie won his third senior cap in his country’s 6-0 defeat to Holland in Amsterdam earlier this month – but looking at home - he knows there will be more opportunities to play for Newcastle is they qualify for the Europa League’s group stage.

Shane Ferguson: “Hopefully, I’ll get more games next season.

“You never know what can happen with the club being in Europe – there could be more opportunities for young players.

“I always just try and work hard for the team and work the channel when I get on.

“It was great to get a few games – I enjoyed it.

“The lads were a credit to the club all season – they did brilliantly."
