Wise To Make A Move For Former Toon Star?

There could be a glimmer of truth in it as the Leeds midfielder has decided to retire from the game.

The 34-year-old, who was capped once for England against Sweden in 2004, has not played since the 1-0 win at Swindon on March 1 but was part of Gary McAllister's squad for the Coca-Cola League One play-off final defeat to Doncaster.

Thompson signed for Newcastle in 1989 and spent four years at St James' Park making 17 appearances.

He was always going to be a great player, and Kevin Keegan knew it, but the player was too impatient to hang around waiting for a first team spot.

The Geordie-born youngster moved on for £200,000 when it was obvious he would be a multi-million player one day.

Sent-off in his very first FA Cup tie when the Magpies played Bournemouth.
Thompson, who also played for Bolton, Aston Villa and Celtic, scored 107 goals in 551 career appearances spanning 17 years.

Thompson: "I've had a good career but I've decided to call it a day.

"The high point was playing for England but I've got plenty of good memories. I'm going to take a bit of time out now but I would like to stay involved in the game."

A lot of water has passed under the Tyne Bridge since 1993 when he left, but would Keegan welcome him back to St James' Park after he was so keen to leave?

Is there a place for him?
