The Sunderland-born star suffered relegation back in 1989 when United crashed out of the old First Division after a long struggle under Willie McFaul and then Jim Smith.

Howey, a youth coach at East Durham and Houghall Community College in Howletch, says Newcastle need to face up to their tough task or pay the penalty.

Howey: "You only have to look down the years at teams in the Premier League that have had the wrong attitude to see it can go horribly wrong.

"Teams like Nottingham Forest and Leeds have thought they were too good to go down before taking the drop.

"Newcastle need to look at this and face up to the fact they are in a real dogfight down there.

"Every year a team gets dragged into it that wasn't expecting to, so Newcastle need to be wary.

"I remember being on holiday when Joe Royle left Man City and Kevin came in. All of a sudden I was inundated with calls on my mobile asking what he was like by the lads.

"Kevin treats his players with such respect and is the best man-manager I've worked with.

"He gets the lads to forget about the pressures and concentrates on working hard in training.

"As a player sometimes training does become a slog but under Kevin you cannot wait to get to the training ground.

"But I do think it is going to be hard to recreate what we had back in the Entertainers years.

"That was at a time when the club was on the up and we had a unique group of players who wanted to be in the Premier League.

"Now the targets have changed a little bit but Kevin will still be confident of steering the club in the right direction."
