What the managers said

Sir Bobby

"In the end, yes, with us losing I would settle for that. It was two major defensive errors, so they scored non-creative goals and went from being 1-0 down to a winning position.

"We plugged away and never stopped working - we wanted to play. I put everyone on that I could to try to salvage a point, which we did in the end.

"We got our rewards from a tough match. Leeds played very well and it was a diplomatic result over all."

About Lee Bowyer’s debut, he added: "It was a tough game for Bowyer. We knew he would get that sort of treatment. It was sad in a way, but that's the way it will be I guess.

"I hope it will settle down and he can start to enjoy his football, but we will support him.

"He took it in his stride. He thought he might get that, but he rode it well.

"But with the service he gave them here and the popular player he was, have they forgotten that?"

Peter Reid

“I thought my team were great. The players gave me everything they had. I cannot fault any of them.

"They have now set themselves standards for the rest of the season because they have got to do this week in and week out.

"I have to admit I was worried until yesterday - then there was a real spark in training which I hadn't sensed before.

"That gave me a lot of confidence and they took it into the game.

"The players came up with the goods, but now they have to do it every week.

"Newcastle have a lot of pace, we tried to slow the game down, drop off and let them have it, then try and consolidate the space in behind.

"I thought there were a lot of good performances. Jody Morris did brilliantly for us today, he got up and down. Domi was tremendous and Sakho has ability and pace."
