Rafa Benitez is currently assessing his squad options and there could be more positive news later this week with Nottingham Forest interested in signing Jack Colback on a permanent deal.
Despite efforts to sign a plethora of players so far this summer, Benitez is finding it tough to get to grips with Newcastle’s lowly budget.
Chronicle Live reported last week that Benitez will be shopping in the bargain basement for the majority of his summer buys and while there is hope behind the scenes there will be at least one arrival that will impress fans, the Toon boss is working tirelessly with his contacts to find players who are available at knockdown prices.
Colback spent last season on loan at Forest and his departure would clear a large chunk off the club’s wage budget with the midfielder currently draining £40,000 per week out of United’s coffers.
The City Ground side could sign Colback by the end of June.
Forest boss Aitor Karanka said: “I hope we can bring in a few more players, before we report back on the 25th.
“When we finished the season I said I would like to start pre-season with as many of the new players as possible.”
