The defender completed a £7.8million move from Rangers to Aston Villa yesterday (as we predicted last week), but KK showed no interest.

The player had an outstanding year in Scotland and his performances were a major factor in Rangers reaching the UEFA Cup final.

Although some reporters suggest Mike Ashley fell out of the race when the price got over £4m, I have heard reports that the player didn't show any interest in a move to Tyneside.

Hardly surprising, as he insisted he was staying at Ibrox right from the start, so obviously no disrespect to the player.

But obviously Martin O'Neill was very persuasive.

The player has so far missed out on international honours but the 26-year-old told the Aston Villa website: "My ambition is to play for my country and I think with Aston Villa I will have that possibility. Every player wants to play international football and that is my aim.

"I'm joining a big club in the Premier League.

"This is the best league in the world and last year Villa did very well. They play very good football and had a fantastic season.

"So I am very happy to come here with the opportunity to play in the Premier League. We are also playing in Europe this season, so that will be good.

"I watched Villa last season and Martin O'Neill is a very good coach. He plays exciting attacking football and I am excited to be here."
