Xabi Alonso scored a stunning goal from his own half to send Liverpool back into the top half of the Barclays Premiership.

The Spaniard lobbed Newcastle's Steve Harper from 65 yards in the second half to secure a deserved win at Anfield.

Alonso's brilliant effort - the second time he has scored from his own half in his Liverpool career - doubled the lead given by Dirk Kuyt's first goal for the club on 29 minutes.

Michael Owen spent most of his homecoming watching the team he left produce a display of crushing efficiency.

Owen barely got a kick against Jamie Carragher, and had plenty of time to view how effective his former club have become.

It was not all his fault because the service to Newcastle's front men was non-existent as they fought to contain a Liverpool side who dominated for long spells.

Their task was not helped by Lee Bowyer's second-half red card, but by then Steve Gerrard had crashed home his 12th of the season and Peter Crouch had seen a towering header touched onto the post by Shay Given, only for the ball to rebound in off the Newcastle keeper.

Liverpool kept their dreams of a top-four finish alive with a convincing victory over an increasingly ragged Newcastle.

The Geordies lost Craig Bellamy, injured in the warm-up, and had Lee Bowyer sent off for a second yellow card with eight minutes left.

Titus Bramble had earlier contributed to their downfall as well with an own goal just seconds after Newcastle took an early lead through Patrick Kluivert.

With some of their players linked with another hotel incident in the morning papers, the day just got worse for their manager Graeme Souness on his return to a stadium he once graced as a player.

Liverpool clicked into gear after that shock early goal by Kluivert and were ahead at the break through Neil Mellor's fifth goal of the season.

Liverpool were increasingly dominant in the second half and they topped off a fine display with a stunning third goal from Milan Baros which compounded Souness' misery.
