Pardew will again be without captain Fabricio Coloccini and is likely to field the same rearguard against Norwich City that he has done the last two games.

Steven Taylor, James Perch, Mike Williamson and Davide Santon are all expected to face Chris Hughton’s side.

Alan Pardew: “It’s a different game for defenders.

“The tiredness really affects offensive players – that brightness and sharpness.

“That’s why I had no problem picking that back four. I thought at Everton we were a bit out of tune – they hadn’t played together before that game. That’s held us in good stead.

“You can only approach the game to win it, which we did.

“It was pretty open at times, which is unusual for a European game.

“We got a grip of the game, and should have won it. Shola (Ameobi) was brilliant. He was drifting past centre-halves as if they weren’t there.

“I can’t complain – I’m absolutely delighted with that team. It was brilliant for me, because now I think we’re going to get stronger.”
