Newcastle United’s pre-season plans are steadily taking shape – with the club set to finalise a friendly in Portugal and a trip to Cardiff City.

Newcastle have played in Lisbon several times, the most notable being October 1968 when Jim Scott scored the away goal that set United on their way to going on to Fairs Cup glory.

However ... Newcastle have yet to confirm any warm-up fixtures.

But negotiations for United to play in the four-team Vodacom Challenge in Johannesburg, South Africa are reportedly at an “advanced stage”.

And a report in South Wales has suggested Newcastle are arranging a visit the Cardiff City Stadium on August 11, a week before the new Premier League season kicks off.

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay: “We have virtually agreed everything on the home friendly, and there are just a few things to finalise before that can be announced.”
