Toon Legend Says We Are In A Worse Mess Than 1992!

Just to remind the player who made an incredible 380 appearances for Newcastle, we were third from bottom in the old Second Division ... and had lost 4-0 at Southend; threw away a 3-0 lead at home to Charlton to lose 4-3; and just been thrashed 5-2 by bottom club Oxford United!

We were looking the Third Division full in the face!

We had Mark Stimson, Kevin Brock and Darren Bradshaw ... in January this year KK took over and we had/have Oba Martins, Michael Owen, Shay Given, Nicky Butt, Habib Beye, etc.

Lee: "In terms of signing players it will be tough for United.

"Pompey are signing Peter Crouch for £10m this week, but they are in Europe.

"Other teams have progressed, too. When Kevin was here first time round we could compete with Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea to attract players.

"Now it is different, and that is sad to say.

"It is a good base of players, don't get me wrong. However, you always need to improve your squad - and improve it with quality.

"So far it has been disappointing, and I think that is because of the European Championships, everybody is behind.

"Hopefully, in the next week or so, we will see some improvements now everybody is back after the summer break.

"There's a a knock-on effect in football and one player has to move on to get things going.

"Kevin is the perfect choice of boss. I hope Newcastle let him run it like he did the first time.

"They are a long way from that position at the moment, though. It will take more than a couple of years.

"Don't forget, we were as good as any team in the Premier League in the mid-1990s.

"No disrespect to anybody, but even the most staunch Newcastle fan will not be expecting the top four next season.

"It will be a long, hard slog to get back to the top two, or even the top four, where KK took us the first time.

"But it can be done in time."
