When his new club Wigan hammered the Mackems 3-0 a couple of weeks ago he said he was "delighted" to score, because of his "love for Newcastle United".

Now those sort of comments make you a legend on Tyneside.

He picked up the problem during Saturday's 1-1 draw at West Ham United, and was replaced before half-time by Julius Aghahowa. He missed the defeat by Hull City in the Carling Cup last night.

Hutchings admits he did not want to gamble on the Frenchman's injury.

Hutchings: "Sibierski felt his hamstring tighten up and we got him off quickly before it got too bad.

"We didn't want him playing on and pulling the muscle, which would have meant him being out for two months or whatever.

"It was important we dealt with it swiftly and the medical staff will assess his condition in the coming days.

"Hopefully we won't be without him for too long because he's an important player for us."

Sibierski had scored in his opening three games for Wigan after joining from Newcastle on a free transfer.
