Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has sold a full team (more than 11 players), but it seems there is more to the story than lining his own nest egg.

According to Barclays, he needs to unload three more players in order to keep Barry Moat interested in a takeover.

The club is believed to have cut their wage bill by £22 million as a result of the sales, bringing the total to £48 million.

Moat will pick up a £40 million overdraft with Barclays, and the bank will help him fund the purchase - if Newcastle’s wage bill can be further decreased.

The top earners are Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Nicky Butt, Geremi, Joey Barton and Jonás Gutiérrez.
