'There are players who are not good enough - I'll get rid of them' - Souness

In this period of transfer rumours and impeding arrivals, Graeme Souness has stated that some players may also be heading out of the St.James Park door as well as being welcomed through it.

Speaking before the Blackburn game the Scot said, ‘There are players who are not good enough and I’ll get rid of them’.

Encouraging words given that it appears that some of our squad are sat on healthy salaries whilst contributing little to the Black ‘n’ White cause. Souness went onto state, ‘whilst I have been here almost everybody has given everything’.

There are though quite clearly one or two players who the ex-Blackburn boss would quite happily see leave the club. Via team selection and various comments in the press, it is almost certain that Laurent Robert is one of those who Souness would listen to offers for.

Other names could include Kieron Dyer, Souness probably no doubt aware of the many influencing factors that appear to support a Dyer transfer. Firstly, Chairman Freddie Shepherd remains unimpressed following Dyer’s refusal to play at Boro on the opening day of the campaign. The fans too have not forgotten this refusal to operate in the wide role and his subsequent lack lustre performance when he was introduced. Rumours of a £65,000 a week wage adds strength to the argument to sell given that Dyer does not give back to the club £65,000’s worth of effort or quality. And finally, being an England international Dyer could still command a transfer fee in the region of £4-5 million, funds that would go a long way to strengthening our feeble defence.

A total revamp of our defence in the summer is definitely on the cards, O’Brien, Hughes and Bramble all players that could be shown the door. We only hope that Souness brings in players of significantly greater quality that Lorenzo Amoruso and Craig Short.

A lot depends on Souey’s signings given that the Scot seems incapable of getting anything resembling team spirit or quality performances out of our current crop of under achieving stars.
