But, what goes on behind closed door stays there, and Toon defender Steven Taylor resisted a parting shot at the departed N'Zogbia.

Taylor insists the Frenchman "didn't fancy" the challenge of helping Newcastle beat relegation, but didn't go any further in his criticism.

Steven Taylor (talking to the Chronicle): "We need players who want to be here now.

"Charles has gone and he didn't want to be here. He wanted to go - fair enough.

"Now we have to get on and battle. There are new signings here now so we get on with it.

"Everybody who is here at the moment is up for the fight. We're in a bad situation - a relegation fight.

"What we need is players who are 100% committed, not players who want to play one week then don't fancy it the next.

"We're happy with what we've got and we can see light at the end of the tunnel."
