Dietmar Hamann scored the goal at Wembley that ended Kevin Keegan's England managerial career when Germany won 1-0, and his resignation saw the Swede move in.

Now manager at Manchester City, he is set to let the German head back home, with Arminia Bielefeld, Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg said to be interested.

He was a controversial signing to say the least when he came to Tyneside. He dropped the biggest clanger of all when he said he didn't like Newcastle city, then said the club "lacked ambition", even though they had broke the transfer world record and signed Alan Shearer.

He was an established German international and we could never fault his heart or commitment when he was on the field, and always looked a classy player. But was desperate to move on and after only 31 appearances for the Mags, in 1999 he ended up at Liverpool.

Born in Waldassen. Won a Champions League winners medal with Liverpool in 2005.
