Steven Taylor: 'Bring On The Stamp-Lickers!'

Last updated : 20 October 2012 By Footy Mad - Editor

s

Steven Taylor: “Play for Sunderland? I would rather collect stamps than stick on that shirt.

“I haven’t got any friends who are Sunderland fans.

“As for players, I’m friendly with one or two from our days with the Under-21s – but that was before they signed for Sunderland.

“Put it this way .... when I’m warming up, their fans have their veins popping out of their necks.

“It’s like I’ve done something to their family or something!”

"I won a penalty following a Steed Malbranque challenge at St James’ Park to rescue a point in the 2008-09 season.

“They didn’t seem to like me after that. It didn’t go down too well.

“I did feel contact although it may not have looked that much. I’ve been taught that if you feel contact, you go down in the box so that is what I did and Shola Ameobi stuck the penalty away.

d

“But the abuse I get doesn’t bother me one little bit. Even when I was starting out, I always enjoyed that hostility.

“I like that sort of thing and they can say what they want, it won’t get to me.

“Last season a few of the local lads like Shola, Harps and I went around explaining to the lads what the derby was all about.

“I was a bit nervous because I didn’t know how they’d cope. It’s only when you step out on the pitch that you realise it is so hostile.

“There were a few tackles flying in and it took us 20 minutes to get going but then Yohan Cabaye made a tackle and I knew he understood.

“It was one of those moments and the best thing that happened.

“The foreign lads have bought into everything. They don’t need telling now.

“All that we’re worried about this year is any niggles we may have.

“I think we can get amongst them. We have players who can hurt them. Our attacking options can hurt any side.

“And then there’s Shola, the Sunderland slayer. His record against them is phenomenal.

“The gaffer has told us we can’t afford to start like we did against Manchester United but I think our quality will be the difference.

“In the later stages of the game, that quality will shine.

“I’m so excited. Even before the Man United game when everyone was talking about that one, I was only thinking about Sunderland.

“After my injury, I’m now fit as a fiddle and I can’t wait.

"If I scored the winner in the 90th minute, hmmmm?

“I think I’d run straight down the tunnel and get out of there in one piece. With the three points in my back pocket."

Sir James Wilson Vincent Savile, OBE, KCSG was born 31 October 1926 in Leeds ... but was a life-long Sunderland supporter.

k

After working as a conscripted coal miner during the Second World War, Savile began a career playing records in, and later managing, dance halls.

He started his media career as a disc jockey on Radio Luxembourg in 1958, and on Tyne Tees Television in 1960, developing a reputation for his flamboyant character and eccentricities.

He later worked primarily for the BBC, where he presented the first edition of Top of the Pops in 1964 and worked on BBC Radio 1 from 1968.

Between 1975 and 1994 he presented Jim'll Fix It, a popular television programme in which he arranged for the wishes of viewers, mainly children, to come true.

I wrote to Jimmy Savile when I was a kid:

"Dear Jim ... Please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please can you fix it for me to get my stammer fixed."

s

I don't believe these allegations against Jimmy Savile. I met him in Leeds General Hospital in the 1980s and he seemed very nice.

Next people will be telling me he wasn't qualified to perform my prostate examination.

BREAKING NEWS - The BBC News channel have just displayed images of the three women who claimed that Jimmy Savile interfered with them sexually. They showed a current picture of each of the women and a picture taken of each of them from the 1970s.

The caption read: Now, then. Now, then. Now, then.
