Stephen Carr is not good enough

Stephen Carr has endured an indifferent start to his Newcastle United career. Following eleven games and one goal he is yet to win many fans over with regards to his defensive capabilities. It is alarming how many conceded goals Carr has been involved in – he has failed to cut out crosses, block shots and is guilty of losing men at important moments.

The undoubted highlight however has been his winner at St.Mary’s. His evident communication skills and on occasions positive forward play have pleased many supporters. His goal at Southampton was optimistically looked upon as the turning point following his unexceptional opening performances. This optimism has not been rewarded however and we are yet to see how Carr has improved the back four to any noticeable degree.

He has certainly added the aggression that Hughes lacked, but in terms of quality, real quality that will result in a Champions League finish, he has not added anything.

One thing that is certain is that Carr has split opinion amongst the Toon Army.

It is my opinion that he will be replaced by the start of next season and we will be forced to admit that he was a panic buy after failing to land more favourable targets.
