Blackburn manager Graeme Souness has admitted that he tried to sign Alan Shearer whilst he was in charge at Liverpool, but was beaten to his signature by former team mate Kenny Dalglish then at Blackburn.

Souness also praised Shearer, describing him as: “A true football legend,” and has warned his defence that Alan still poses the biggest threat in our team.

Wales captain Gary Speed is still celebrating the amazing Bellamy-inspired win over Italy and has described Wales’ attacking quartet as amongst the best in the world.

Davies, Giggs, Bellamy and Hartson is pretty impressive. Replace Hartson with Shearer and that’s the first choice front line in a GB team. Owen on the bench of course!

Shay Given has been speaking about the disappointment of Ireland’s defeat by Switzerland, but told The Evening Chronicle that he is completely focused on his 150th premiership start for Newcastle.

"We are all fully aware that after tomorrow's trip to Blackburn we have five games at St James's Park in the space of 15 days and a good result at Ewood Park would set us up perfectly for those,” said Shay.

Andy O’Brien has been sticking up for Titus Bramble, claiming that the criticism that he has received is totally unjustified.

"I think Titus was treated unfairly by some people. He came here in the summer from a small club like Ipswich and had to adapt to his new surroundings and the different kinds of pressure you get at a club the size of Newcastle,” O’Brien told the Journal.

"He is lovely lad as well. The principles, at whatever standard of football you play, are the same. If you are not in the team you have to work hard in training and keep your head down.

"One of the secrets of
Newcastle's success is the strength of our team spirit and he has become a part of that.”

You must have been living on the moon or on Wearside not to know that Alan only needs to net once tomorrow to make it 300 league and cup goals. But, in true Shearer style, he has claimed that the three points are all that matter at Blackburn

It would be great if Alan could seal the points himself though.
