The left-back headed for the bright lights of Liverpool in summer 2011 but after a promising start, the move turned into a bit of a nightmare.

Injury, fitness and form meant that he only started eight Premier League matches in the final three seasons he was at Anfield.

Having been paid up by the scousers midway through last season, a move to Newcastle looked to be going through in January until wages proved to be too big a hurdle to be overcome – despite United desperate for more options as they leaked goals for fun.

Whether Jose Enrique could/would have been the answer is maybe another thing, though little doubt that at his best he was Newcastle’s best left-back of the last 10 years or more – though against admittedly limited competition.

Enrique has dropped into the second tier of Spanish football with Real Zaragoza, signing a two year deal as a free agent.
