Gareth Southgate did himself no harm with two wins out of two, but his job is still on the line, and McClaren obviously fits the bill.

Gibson has apologised to deposed England boss Steve McClaren after making critical comments about his reign on Teesside.

The two men worked together for five years between 2001 and McClaren's appointment to the national job as the club consolidated its top flight status and started to set its sights a little higher.

Gibson: "Despite their accuracy, my comments did not represent my thoughts and assessment of Steve's five-year period at Middlesbrough.

"During that period, Steve led Middlesbrough to unprecedented achievements.

"We won our first major trophy, enjoyed two wonderful years in Europe culminating in the UEFA Cup final, obtained our highest Premier League finish and points total and twice progressed to the semi-final of the FA Cup.

"The McClaren years were undoubtedly the most successful this football club has ever had.

"I have spoken to Steve since the feature was published, apologising to him and emphasising our gratitude at the marvellous success he brought our club."
