United look to come out of a slump in form and confidence, which prompted manager Alan Pardew to admit in midweek his club are in a relegation fight.

The Magpies were booed off after their last home game, a 1-1 draw with Maritimo which qualified them for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Danny Simpson: “It’s a massive game.

“We know they want to see the team winning but more than ever we need them behind us on Monday night – we want to make it tough for Wigan.

“We don’t want them to come to St James’ and make it easy for them. If we perform like we did at Stoke on Wednesday and the fans get behind us, then I’m sure we’ll get the win we’re due.

“Just pack it out please and get behind us.

"People saw the effort and the way we performed in midweek and I’m sure that’s what they want from us.

"They want to see the players put 100% in and if they get behind us on Monday they’ll get 100% out of every single one of us and hopefully come the final whistle we’ll all be going home with a little bit of a smile on our face – and three points.”
