Should We Rid Ourselves Of This Mackem Mentality?

A win against Wolves would have put us in an ideal position to SERIOUSLY threaten Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool for that fourth spot and a Champions League place.

A game that was a 'given' for a result, and we fell short of the mark because we didn't have that killer instinct.

The Toon huffed and puffed in a match we should have won in a canter, and it's games like that we should be approaching in a better attitude.

You don't win trophies by beating the Mackems, yet that is the position we are in, getting the most joy in a season from beating the "Unwashed".

We have to be better than that!

Jonas Gutiérrez says today the club and team are not looking at that fourth spot ... but WHY NOT?

Jonas Gutiérrez: “Are we thinking about fourth place? No, I don’t think the team think about that.

"They think about the next game and about sticking together and helping each other out.

“We’re disappointed with the final result. We didn’t start the second half very well at all and when you make that type of mistake at this level, that is what happens.

“Things like this sometimes happen. I don’t think we thought the game was won or anything like that, I just think that for whatever reason we didn’t start the second half like we started the first.

“We know the next game is the game that all the Geordies want to win.

“It’s the game that all the players want to be involved in.

“I can’t wait to get started because I have played in these games before and know what they are like.

“I am sure Sunderland will want to get some revenge for what happened at the start of the season.

"They will want to come here and get something.

"It is going to be a hard game because they have a good squad and they seem to have been on a really good run since they changed their manager.

“They have taken a lot of points and it is going to be a difficult game. But we believe in ourselves and we are desperate to take the three points.

“People have been talking about possibly getting back into the top four, but we are not thinking about that.

"We know we are in a good position and that we have a few matches coming up at home that we should be targeting to win.

“But this game proved how difficult every match in the Premier League is."
