Shay Withdraws From Squad

He will not make the trip to Dublin, but I don't think Newcastle fans should read too much into it because the player is simply preparing himself for the big Premiership kick-off this weekend.

Given picked up a back injury during Newcastle's win over FK Ventspils in the UEFA Cup in midweek. He looked to be struggling in the first half and many thought he would be replaced by Steve Harper in the second period. But he said afterwards it was nothing that a few days rest wouldn't put right.

Glenn Roeder agreed with Ireland chief Steve Staunton that it would be better for all concerned to keep Given on Tyneside for treatment.

Roeder: "I've spoken with Steve Staunton and he has allowed us to withdraw Shay from the Ireland squad for the game against Holland next week. Instead Shay will remain on Tyneside and have treatment for a slight back problem. I was very grateful to Steve for allowing Shay to stay here and receive treatment."
