Sam's Official Introduction

Despite appearing at St James' Park in three high profile pre-season friendlies against Celtic, Juventus and Sampdoria (and winning all three), this is his 'official' introduction to the Geordies.

But he says it will all turn flat unless United get off to a flyer, and he has tipped Mark Viduka to spark the strike-force into goal action.

Michael Owen will return to the squad after a hamstring strain but Allardyce is likely to stick with Viduka and Obafemi Martins, who secured the Magpies' 3-1 win at Bolton on the opening day.

Claudio Cacapa and Jose Enrique will also be pushing to figure from the start.

Allardyce: "Mark has got all the qualities we are looking for and he can score double figures in goal terms.

"If he can reach the same level over this season I will be delighted.

"His experience in the Premier League is what makes him so valuable for us.

"He also has so much talent to go with that experience. He is a consistent centre forward who can breach the tightest defences.

"Claudio Cacapa and Jose Enrique are two very, very experienced players who are going to have a very big impression on the club this season.

"Cacapa is going to be a major asset in terms of stopping goals which is one of the biggest problems we have been having over the last few years."
