Shearer admitted last week the time wasn't right for him to join KK's coaching staff and is set to concentrate on his TV punditry for the time being.

Keegan: "I believe that Alan has come out and stated his position.

"At the moment it is difficult for him to come into the club as No 2 because of his commitments.

"Alan is very much the same as myself. He feels if you can't do something properly then it is best not to do it at all.

"What we have agreed is that he will come into training with us to start with, and then we will revisit this later.

"That will be when his commitments to other people are no longer in place.

"Some of his TV work will run out pretty much after the summer.

"So the door is left wide open and it is up to Alan and myself to come up with the right solution if that's the right word for him coming in here.

"I've left the door wide open and that's because I respect him and I know he brings something to the party.

"He has time to think - and he will think deeply because he always does.

"That is the situation at the moment - it is clear as that."
