Reds Expected Better From Toon

Workington boss, and ex-Newcastle midfielder, Tommy Cassidy is delighted Newcastle are sending a team to play in Cumbria, despite the "on-off" fixture having had more dates than a Kings Cross hooker.

But I'm sure he had hoped for one or two big names to boost the crowd as the match was supposed to boost the funds for the club.

But with the new campaign just days away, and a massive match in Europe to follow, it is hardly surprising Glenn Roeder was not prepared to risk any of his first team squad.

Cassidy, who made 239 appearances for Newcastle in a ten year span between 1970 and 1980, will have to make do with a Newcastle XI including Youth team players and the odd Reserve.

The match kicks off on Monday evening at 7pm at Borough Park.
