Newcastle United have reportedly joined the race for West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans.

The Baggies are set to suffer relegation from the Premier League, and that means that a host of players will be leaving the club this summer in pursuit of top flight moves.

Some players have release clauses in their contracts, and one such player is centre back Jonny Evans, who can leave for just £3million once West Brom slip into the Championship.

The Northern Irish defender has impressed since his 2015 move from Manchester United, and will certainly be in demand at such a bargain price given his superb displays in the Baggies defence.

Now, The Mirror claim that Newcastle United have joined the race for his signature, with Mike Ashley no doubt keen to sanction such a bargain deal for manager Rafael Benitez.

Benitez does have Florian Lejeune and Jamaal Lascelles at his disposal, but with questions over the future of Chancel Mbemba, Evans could add another veteran option to Benitez's defence.

With three league titles to his name, the 30-year-old is a proven winner in the past, and whilst a host of Premier League clubs – such as Crystal Palace, Everton, Leicester City and West Ham United are also keen – Newcastle should certainly pursue such a cut-price deal.
