Peter Beardsley: “At the moment, if you listen to most pundits they will say we can make the quarter-finals or the semis.

“I have to say it will be tough, you have to look at Brazil, Spain, Germany and Argentina too and all of them are more than capable.

“Argentina have Jonas Gutierrez, who is well thought of here in Newcastle, and they have the best player in the world in Messi, so the standards are sky high.

“I just think it is going to be a brilliant tournament and it is now starting to take shape so we can all look forward to it. I just hope this team can go one better.

“For me, the three key men are Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

“Fabio Capello will manage the situation as it goes on. I really do think that he is a master of that.

“The standards will have to be high to go one better that we did in 1990, but, as I say it, promises to be a brilliant tournament and it will be exciting to see it all unfold.”
