I know Magpies fans who say they will be shouting for the English team in the Champions League final because: "we want to get into Europe our own way, rather than hope for Chelsea to fail in Europe."

Although Pardew said yesterday, "I hope Bayern win the final", he was more diplomatic today.

Alan Pardew: "Rules are rules and we understand that, we have no complaints.

"Spurs and even perhaps Arsenal could suffer if Chelsea win it.

"We want third place, rather than fourth, and we are going for that.

"I watched the UEFA Cup last night. It is a great competition, and we could go for that.

"But the Champions League is the aim."

After Chelsea's remarkable efforts in Barcelona, there's now a chance 4th place won't be good enough.

If the Blues win the final in Munich next month they're guaranteed a place in next season's Champions League as holders of the competition.

But only four teams from any nation can qualify.
