Viana spent last season on loan at Osasuna, but he was hit by a serious injury and was largely confined to the bench.

The 25-year-old, who joined United for £8.5m in 2002 but never justified his huge price tag and left three years later for a cut-price £1.5m, failed to make the Portugal squad for Euro 2008.

And having been unable to make an impression at Osasuna, he will return to Valencia for next season, unless the club can find a buyer this summer.

Portuguese international, joined Newcastle for £8.5m when only 19. Usually plays on the left of midfield but says he prefers central midfield. Described by Bobby Robson: "He will become a legend". Sadly it wasn't with Newcastle. Went back to Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan in 2004. And left the club in a ridiculous cut price deal in 2005.
