We are constantly reminded of his "amazing pace" but perhaps he would be a better player if he took the ball with him!

No-one doubts his work rate, but "headless chicken" would probably be a better way to describe his efforts.

Now Obertan says he is hoping to impress boss Alan Pardew in pre-season – and force his way into the starting XI for the first game of the campaign.

Gabriel Obertan: “As a first team player you have to prove all the time what you can do in front of the manager.

“No matter if that’s in training, friendly games, reserve games or first team.

“You are always looking to improve and catch the manager’s eye.

“I showed last season I can play in a different position when needed.

“But you just want to play your part.

“I am looking forward to finding some rhythm and coming back fully fit.

“You always need that.”
