The 27-year-old centre-back spent a period on loan at Newcastle a couple of years ago, but Glenn Roeder decided not to take up the option on him.

Although born in Olney, Maryland (USA) he has spent his entire career in Europe starting in France with Metz before moving to Belgium.

A statement on AC Milan's official website reads: "AC Milan would like to inform that they have signed Oguchi Onyewu on a permanent basis from Standard Liege.

"The USA international has signed until June 30 2012."

He's not the first to struggle at St James' Park then be a success at Milan.

Jon Dahl Tomasson played for Newcastle during the 1997/98 season, making 34 appearances scoring four goals.

Signed from SC Heerenveen in Holland for £2.2m having topped the Dutch goalscoring league in 1998/99 he was a major flop.

But not only did he set Europe alight with major success at Milan but he helped Denmark win with European Championship.
