The Hammers new manager Sam Allardyce wants Nolan to replace Scott Parker as skipper at Upton Park.
It emerged earlier this week that the midfielder had turned down the offer of a new contract at St James' Park, with two years still remaining on his current deal.
But that is because he wanted an improved five-year deal and Newcastle were offering a two-year extension.
The 28-year-old has been consistently impressive since making the move to Tyneside from Bolton in 2009, first helping Newcastle bounce back to the top flight and then carrying on his fine form with 12 goals in the Premier League (more goals than Wayne Rooney).
