... but the Newcastle manager saw the transfer deadline come and go, and he isn't going to make a meal of it. He failed in their bid to bring French striker Frederic Piquionne to the club on loan, with the 28-year-old instead heading for Monaco on deadline day. But as the Toon gaffa says "such is life".

Roeder: "What is the point in bringing people in who won't bring anything to the team? We don't want bodies in here just to make up the numbers. We will now have to go with what we have.

"We haven't actually been able to do that this season because of the injuries, but we are starting to get players back.

"I have to admit we are a bit light in the top half of the team, but what we have is of sufficient quality.

"The last three days have been busy. We were offered a few players who would have been very interesting acquisition as loan players.

"But when you are looking to see what is in the market place at this time of year, we found that clubs wouldn't let the players out.

"That's because there were issues about them signing permanently if they did well here.

"One of them was Piquionne from St Etienne. The rest of them, in my opinion, weren't good enough to play here."
