The Sunday Sun has suffered a sales decline of more than 20% in the first six months of the year, with the publisher blaming the circulation drop on the paper's local team, Newcastle United, doing too well in the Premier League last season.

A spokesman for the Sunday Sun: "The ongoing economic downturn continues to present challenges across the entire regional publishing industry.

"However, we continue to take actions to strengthen our brands across all platforms including our newspapers, websites and mobile sites."
